Dear Families,
Here is what's been happening over the past week and what is planned for this coming week.
What's Up!
- Reading: We read Seal Surfer. In this story we focused on summarizing and writing evaluation style questions. We continued to practice these skills with our own books during Read to Self time. Next week we will be reading the story Two Days in May. We will be focusing on the skill of compare and contrast along with reviewing fact and opinion.

Students have also been working hard on their tic tac toe writing boards during work on writing. These boards have 9 writing activities that the students get to choose from to complete during work on writing.

- Math: We are continuing MULTIPLYING! In chapter 6 we are focusing on learning the rest of our multiplication facts along with solving problems with multiplication. I will be sending home the flashcards for the remaining facts tonight. Please make sure to go over homework with your child each day and begin to spend 5-10 minutes each night studying multiplication facts. Don’t forget you can view the text book online by going to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com.
- Science: We have talked about water usage this week as well as other interesting facts about water.
- Social Studies: We have been working on maps of the east this week. Please begin to practice the states located in the east.
- Cursive: Students are having a lot of fun learning their new letters. We now know the letters a, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, p, r, t, u, y, k, r, s, o, w, b and v. We will continue to practice our keyboarding skills in computer lab as well as learning our cursive letters in class.
Report Cards
Report cards are coming home tonight, February 11, 2011. Please sign the report card envelope and have your child return the envelope only. I look forward to seeing you all at conferences on February 21 and 23 to discuss your child's progress.
Multiplication
Keep studying those facts. The more they have memorized, the easier it will be.

Valentine's Party
We will be celebrating on Monday, February 14th at 2:30. We are going to keep this a low key party. We will be passing out and opening valentines, playing valentines bingo and making special valentines. Please let me know if you need another copy of our class names so your child will know the names of all their classmates for valentines. Students are not to exchange valentine gifts or special valentines with specific friends at school. If valentine cards are to be given out in the classroom – all students in the class should receive one. Also, do not send any candy with the valentines. Thank you!
Behavior
Our new word is FRIENDSHIP. The students once again must keep at least one letter in order to participate in our fun activity on Monday, February 21st. Please remind your child of your expectations and the Amberly High 5. This includes being responsible for doing their chores around the classroom including making their lunch choice in the morning and turning their homework in first thing.
