Newsletter for March 25, 2011

Dear Families,

Here is what's been happening over the past week and what is planned for this coming week.  We had two great assemblies today.  We will not have a newsletter next week so have a happy and safe spring break!  Take the time to relax and have some great family time!

What's Up!

*      Reading:   This week we spent the week working on the inferring strategy and reviewing other strategies in small groups and individually.  Next week we will NOT have a story due to the shortened week.  We will however continue to focus our reading time on checking for understanding, summarizing, predicting and making inferences.  Remember even though we are on spring break starting March 31st – it is still important that your child has a GREAT book to read and enjoy!

*      Writing:  We will be writing our SOS papers next week.  This will be a persuasive paper written from the viewpoint of the sailors who were trapped on the ice in the story, Trapped by the Ice.  It is so much fun!

*      Spelling: No Spelling

*      Vocabulary: No Vocabulary

*      Math:   We began chapter 8 on geometry this week!  Today was spent learning about 3D shapes and how to distinguish one shape from another based on their properties.  We also discussed some new math vocabulary like edges, faces and vertices.  When doing homework, please take a moment to discuss the vocabulary terms used.  Geometry is VOCABULARY rich and we need all the practice we can get with these terms.

*      Science: Science test will be Monday, March 28th.  Please make sure your student is prepared.  I have attached a copy of the study guide.  Our last unit of study this year will be all about matter!

*      Social Studies: We will have the Social Studies Test on Tuesday, March 29th.  This will include knowing the names and locations of the states of the east.    I am sending home a study guide today and I am attaching a copy as well.  Online resources are www.sheppardsoftware.com (USA) & http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/maps/usa-numbers.pdf  After break we will start learning about the last region – the West!

*      Cursive and Keyboarding: Students are having a lot of fun learning their new letters. We now know all our lowercase and capital letters.  Students should have all the pages in their cursive books from 1-84 completed by Monday the 28th.  Most students should have these completed already.  We have also worked hard over the last few weeks to type our research papers on natural disasters.  Our final copies are displayed proudly on the wall of fame.

More Multiplication Ideas

Keep studying those facts. The more they have memorized, the easier it will be. Here are websites or use the flashcards we sent home earlier.  If you are looking for other ideas, send me an email or give me a call!

Behavior

Our new word is Acceptance. The students once again must keep at least one letter in order to participate in our fun activity on March 28th. Please remind your child of your expectations and the Amberly High 5. This includes being responsible for doing their chores around the classroom including making their lunch choice in the morning and turning their homework in first thing.
