Newsletter October 29, 2010

Dear Families,

What an interesting week for sure!  Let’s hope next week is a bit calmer. J Here is what's been happening over the past week and what is planned for next week.

What's Up!

·         Reading: This past week we read the story Anthony Reynoso where we focused on comprehension skills such as inferencing and predicting.  We also worked on plural nouns, proper nouns and complete sentences in language arts.   Next week will be dedicated to writing.  We will finish our Apple of My Eye paragraphs where our focus was on writing an interesting beginning, using our college words and complete sentences.  We will also take our first writing assessment.

·         Spelling: Words from Reading Writing Workshop    (See below – my attachment wasn’t working right…)

·         Vocabulary: None this week

·         Math: Next week in math we will be taking the chapter 2 test on Tuesday.  A good review would be to go through the online textbook of chapter two with your child.   We will then pretest into chapter three which continues the exploration of addition and subtraction of larger numbers as well as a continued focus on estimating.   Don’t forget you can view the text book online by going to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com.

·         Science: The end of the plant unit is nearing!  Thursday will be the test day.  A study guide will be coming home with your student to study for this test.

·         Social Studies: Social studies next week will begin with the test on Monday.  We will then wrap up our study of the Midwest by watching the movie The Lorax.  Then it is onto the South!

·         Keyboarding:  We continue to work on our keyboarding skills.  Ask your student about how they are to remember where the keys are located!

Conferences

If you were not able to sign up for conferences at open house, please call the office at 323-5900 to set up your fall and spring conference.  I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress.  Please be aware, conferences will be especially important to attend this year because as Mrs. Daoust stated in the family newsletter, “This year, teachers will not be writing “Narrative comments” on student report cards for the 1st quarter and the 3rd quarter. This district decision is due to the fact that parents will be attending face to face conferences with teachers during those two quarters. Informational comments about your students and their first (third) quarter achievements will be included in the parent/teacher conference.”  If you are unable to attend conferences during the scheduled time, please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can set up a time that works for all of us.

Behavior

Our current word is PERSEVERANCE.  The students once again must keep at least one letter to participate in a fun activity by November 22nd.  Please remind your child of your expectations and the Amberly High 5.

Party

A special thank you to all who helped to make our Halloween Party a HUGE success!   The kids had a wonderful time.  You are a great group of supportive parents!

Veteran’s Day Show

The Third Grade Veteran’s Day show will be on November 11th at 6:30pm.  A second letter from Mrs. Crosman went home in their red shiny folders yesterday.  The students have been practicing very hard and the show promises to be great!

Dates to Remember

·         November 5 – No school for students!

·         November 11 – Veteran’s Day Show

·         November 16 and 18 – Fall Conferences

·         November 24-26 – No School: Thanksgiving Recess

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Mrs. Jessica Winstanley
