Newsletter for November 4, 2010

Dear Families,

I can’t believe we are into November already! Here is what's been happening over the past week and what is planned for next week.

What's Up!

·         Reading: This week was dedicated to writing.  We finished our Apple of My Eye paragraphs where our focus was on writing an interesting beginning, using our college words and complete sentences.  We also took our first writing assessment. Next week we will read the story The Talking Cloth where we will focus again on comprehension skills such as inferencing and predicting.  We also will continue our work on plural nouns, proper nouns and complete sentences in language arts.

·         Spelling: Words from The Talking Cloth    (See Attachment)

·         Vocabulary: Words from The Talking Cloth    (See Attachment)

·         Math: This week we pretested and began chapter three which continues the exploration of addition and subtraction of larger numbers as well as a continued focus on estimating.   We will be working on traditional regrouping such as borrowing and carrying along with teaching the students some other fun ways to solve addition and subtraction problems.  Don’t forget you can view the text book online by going to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com.

·         Science: The end of the plant unit is here!  Today, Thursday, was the test day.  Next week we will be starting our animal unit.  Our focus will be on vertebrate animals (mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles).

·         Social Studies: Social studies this week began with the test on Monday.  We then wrapped up our study of the Midwest by watching the movie The Lorax.  Next week it is onto the South!  We will be exploring the various aspects of the geography of the south including natural and man-made resources, natural features, and other characteristics and problems unique to the south.

·         Keyboarding:  We continue to work on our keyboarding skills.  Ask your student about how they are to remember where the keys are located!  Today we explored some fun keyboarding games online.  You can check them out at home as well:

Conferences

I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress.  I will be sending home my conference schedule today (see attached).  Make sure you record your time on your calendars.  Please be aware, conferences will be especially important to attend this year because as Mrs. Daoust stated in the family newsletter, “This year, teachers will not be writing “Narrative comments” on student report cards for the 1st quarter and the 3rd quarter. This district decision is due to the fact that parents will be attending face to face conferences with teachers during those two quarters. Informational comments about your students and their first (third) quarter achievements will be included in the parent/teacher conference.”  If you are unable to attend conferences during the scheduled time, please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can set up a time that works for all of us.
