Newsletter for May 20, 2011

Dear Families,

Closer and closer to the end of the year!  It is hard to believe!  Here is what's been happening over the past week and what is planned for this coming week.

What's Up!

1.       Reading:   This week we built progressive stories with the Mystery of Harris Burdick story pictures as well as wrote our own stories to share with the class next week.  We will be working on comparing Traditional Fairy Tales to Fractured Fairy Tales the next two weeks.  During this time we will not only compare them, but we will also write our own Fractured Fairy Tales if time permits.

2.     Writing:  We have been working on our final writing Tic-Tac-Toe.  Next week we will be taking our comparative writing assessment.

3.     Spelling: Spelling List for Comparison Writing Week

*       compare

*       contrast

*       similar

*       different

*       first

*       then

*       next

*       finally

*       example

*       detail

4.     Vocabulary: None this week as it is involved in our daily discussions of our writing and read-to-self books

5.     Math:   We continued to work on measurement this week learning about cm, meters, and km.  We also began learning about extending our multiplication and division facts.  This is DIFFICULT for many.  Please help with homework so that they can continue to see how you can use basic facts like 8x5=40 to help with 80x50=4000.

6.     Science: We reviewed for our Matter test and took the test on Wednesday.  The rest of the year will be spent on learning about light, Owl Pellets and other fun scientific experiments!

7.     Social Studies: We have started our project based on the movie UP for the rest of the year.  This will end up being a scrapbook they bring home!  If you have any type of scrapbooking materials or tools you would like to donate to the project feel free to send into the classroom.  We are looking for things such as magazines that relate to famous or fun places in the USA, stickers, borders, scrapbook paper, special scissors, etc.

8.    Cursive and Keyboarding: Our social studies commercials about the West are coming along!  We are enjoying using photo story to build this project.  It is as much an exercise if following directions as it is a research project.

More Multiplication Ideas

Keep studying those facts. We are taking 1 minute timed fact tests several times a week.  The more they have memorized, the easier it will be. It is also critical for them to know their basic facts so they can use them when we do our harder multiplication and division in chapter 11 next week.  Here are websites or use the flashcards we sent home earlier.  If you are looking for other ideas, send me an email or give me a call!

Field Trip

The weather may not have been top notch, but we still had a wonderful time learning about groundwater and exploring the nature center on Thursday.  Thanks again to our VERY wonderful chaperones for helping to keep everyone safe and happy on our fun filled trip.  Check out our fun pictures of our great trip: https://picasaweb.google.com/WinGrinClass/NatureCenter2011?authkey=Gv1sRgCOnF7q62tKOzFg&feat=directlink.

Behavior

Our one final word for the year is CARING.  This started Monday, May 9th.  It is extremely important that we spend the rest of the year being caring towards one another and not hurting feelings.  Our reward will be June 2nd.

End of the Year Celebration

To celebrate a successful year of third grade we will be watching the movie UP on the last day of school, June 3rd.  We, the third grade teachers, will be providing healthy snacks for our wonderful students.
