Computer Class Update: Week 12

The holidays and Christmas break are quickly approaching and the students are getting very excited.  I am looking forward to attending the preschool Christmas concert tonight with my family to watch my daughter sing.  Good luck to the students who will be participating in the band concert next Tuesday.  I am sure you will play beautifully!

Here is what we have been up to and what we are working on this week....

First Grade
Project #3: Creation Story Books
The first graders finished up their creation books today.  I will be sending these home next week for you do see what they have created.

Online Practice: www.scootpad.com
As students finished up their creation books today, I had them login to an online practice website called ScootPad.  This site links student practice to the common core state standards in reading and math.  Students log in and can practice the skills they are learning in reading and math class.  The kids seem to really be enjoying this free program.  I gave parent letters to Mrs. Schubert to send home so you can log in to the program and view your child's progress.  The letter also provides you with your student's login an password.  ScootPad is available online and their are apps for both android and apple devices.

Second Grade
Project #5: Technologies past and present
We are continuing a multi-week project learning about how technology has changed over the last 100 years. We are using the site PBS Schools (http://www.pbs.org/kcet/publicschool/index.html) to help us better understand what life and school were like over 100 years ago. This week students created their own inventions using Tux Paint.  They then popped them into MS Words and named and described their inventions.

Third and Fourth Grade
Project #3: Whose property is it?
The 3rd and 4th grade students are participating in a project on intellectual property. We are discussing what property is, how to ask permission to use it and proper citation. Students are learning the meaning of the word Plagiarism and respect.  This is a very important concept for students to understand. They need to realize that just because something is on the Internet, it does not mean it is theirs or free to use. We will be equating the concept to the 8th commandment: Thou shall not steal.

Third grade students received their grades on their animoto projects today.  Overall they did a fantastic job.  I was very proud of them and shared several of the videos with my technology director.

Fifth Grade
Project #3: Christian Digital Citizens
The fifth graders are working on a project to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of websites. We are discussing that just because information is online, it doesn't make it factual or true. We are learning how to find out who the author is of a site and who sponsored the site. We are discussing how anyone can make a website, so it is important to use reliable resources when doing research for school.  As the students about the Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide website.

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a great week!
