Parent Volunteers Need Background Checks

Dear Parents,

Will you be volunteering at a class party, field trip, or helping out weekly in the classroom?  Volunteers are an important part of our students’ education here at Amberly.  Volunteers work to help make our parties safe and fun.  They make supervising all our students during field trips possible.  They help give extra attention to students who may need a little extra love and support.  Volunteers are very special.

All volunteers working directly with children must have a criminal background check.  This includes working one-on-one with students in the classroom, volunteering at parties or supervising groups on fieldtrips.  If you are planning on volunteering in any of the above capacities, please email me for a form that authorizes Portage Public Schools to run a background check.  You can also pick the form up in the office.  This should be completed each year, so please complete the form and return as soon as possible.

Also, weekly volunteers should have a volunteer badge made for them to pick up in the office each time they work in the school.  A form is available in the office for you to complete to have a badge made with your name.

We would also like to remind you that anything you observe about any of the students needs to stay here at school.  Just as you wouldn’t want parents discussing your student’s behaviors or academics with others, they don’t want you discussing theirs.  Also, we’d like to reassure you that we are well aware of the needs of the many students in our class.  If for example you are working with a student who appears to be below where other students are, we have many things in place to help that student.  We will not be able to discuss the many things that are in place for that child, just as we won’t discuss things in place for your child.

Parent volunteers are a valuable resource in our class and greatly help our students and us!  Thanks for being willing to so generously give your time!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Winstanley
