Newsletter for November 12

Dear Families,

After much hard work and practice, our Veteran’s Day Show was a huge success! A special thanks to Mrs. Crosman for all her hard work in putting this show together. It was great!
Here is what's been happening over the past week and what is planned for next week.
What's Up!
· Reading/Writing: This week we read the story The Talking Cloth where we focused again on comprehension skills such as inferencing and predicting. We also continued our work on plural nouns, proper nouns and complete sentences in language arts. In writing we introduced persuasive writing by modeling using a graphic organizer and turning it into a quality piece. Next week we will read the story Dancing Rainbows. We will be discussing the strategy of evaluating the author’s intent. This includes discussing what the author’s purpose was for the paper. Next week students will also be writing persuasive papers. They will be pretending to be turkeys and their job is to convince people not to eat turkey on Thanksgiving. The week of Thanksgiving we will be taking our Theme 2 reading test.
· Spelling: Words from Dancing Rainbows (See Attachment)
· Vocabulary: Words from Dancing Rainbows (See Attachment)
· Math: This week we continued the exploration of addition and subtraction of larger numbers by working on traditional regrouping such as borrowing and carrying. Don’t forget you can view the text book online by going to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com.
· Science: This week we started our animal unit. Our focus will be on vertebrate animals (mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles). We have been discussing animal needs and comparing them to plant needs.
· Social Studies: This week we began our study of the South! We worked on learning our states and capitals locations. We also began reading informational books about the south.
· Keyboarding: We continue to work on our keyboarding skills. Ask your student about how they are to remember where the keys are located! This week we explored the program Microsoft Publisher. Students made persuasive posters for our Veteran’s Day Show and also worked on thank you cards.
Report Cards and Conferences
Report cards will be coming home with our students on Monday, November 15th. Please sign and return the envelope so we know you have received the report card.
I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress. I will be sending home my conference schedule once again today (see attached). Make sure you record your time on your calendars. Please be aware, conferences will be especially important to attend this year because as Mrs. Daoust stated in the family newsletter, “This year, teachers will not be writing “Narrative comments” on student report cards for the 1st quarter and the 3rd quarter. This district decision is due to the fact that parents will be attending face to face conferences with teachers during those two quarters. Informational comments about your students and their first (third) quarter achievements will be included in the parent/teacher conference.” If you are unable to attend conferences during the scheduled time, please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can set up a time that works for all of us.
Behavior
Our current word is PERSEVERANCE. The students once again must keep at least one letter to participate in a fun activity by November 22nd. Please remind your child of your expectations and the Amberly High 5.
Veteran’s Day Show
The Third Grade Veteran’s Day show was a huge success! I am so proud of our third graders. They sang and played their instruments beautifully. Thank you to all the parents who helped prepare our singers and get them to the program on time and ready to sing. A special thank you to all our Veterans, your great service to our country has not gone unnoticed.
