Computer Class Update: Week 1

We had a great start to Computer Class this year.  The students are very eager to learn and get on the computers.

Getting to know you!
Last Thursday (First and Third Grade) and this Tuesday (Second, Fourth and Fifth Grade) we took our class period getting to know each other.  I introduced my self to the classes using a PowerPoint.  Then we went around the room and the students shared their names and something special about themselves with me. I enjoyed hearing about their favorite colors, foods, places to go and other unique facts.  I am doing my very best to learn all of their names as quickly as possible.  I am about half way there.

Acceptable Use Policy - Please Return to the Classroom Teacher
We also went over the Acceptable Use Policy for the computers at St. Michael's.  Your student should have brought home the policy along with a form for you to sign and return.  These forms can be returned to their classroom teacher.

Project #1: Rules of the Lab
Today, with my first and third graders, we started a project about the rules of the lab.  We discussed the 10 Commandments and how they were a set of rules God gave to his people to help them live in a God pleasing way.  We watched a short video about the 10 Commandments from YouTube.  You can check out the video here.

We then brainstormed what commandments they thought God would give us if he were helping us decide how to act in the computer lab.  The students came up with many great ideas, many of which were on the list I had created for them.  To view the commandments for the lab, click here.

Once we had established our rules, the students were assigned their computer seat and we began to get everyone logged in.  I am especially proud of my first graders who were excellent listeners and learned how to log themselves in to the computers!  High Fives all around!

Next week we will be starting the 10 commandments project with the rest of the students and finishing the project with the 1st and 3rd graders.  The end project result will be to create Wordle word clouds using the most important words from our lab rules.  Feel free to check out and make your own word clouds at Wordle at http://www.wordle.net/.  This rubric will be used to access their projects.

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me!

Have a great weekend!
