Computer Class Update: Week 2

Project #1: Rules of the Lab
Last week, with my first and third graders, we finished the project about the rules of the lab.  We reviewed the 10 Commandments and our 10 Commandments for the computer lab.  The students then summarized a list of the important words in each commandment. To view the commandments for the lab, click here.

Once we had our list, we went to our assigned computers and logged in.  We opened up Internet Explorer and went to Wordle at http://www.wordle.net/.
The students created some wonderful word clouds about our rules.  This was a lot of typing, especially for our littlest friends, but I am really proud of the perseverance they showed in their work.  This rubric will be used to access their projects.

The second, fourth and fifth grade students started the 10 commandments project.  We watched a short video about the 10 Commandments from YouTube.  You can check out the video hereWe then brainstormed what commandments they thought God would give us if he were helping us decide how to act in the computer lab.  The students came up with many great ideas, many of which were on the list I had created for them.  Once we had established our rules, the students sat at their assigned computer seat and we began to get everyone logged in.  The second and fifth graders successfully completed their Wordle word clouds, but unfortunately due to a network outage, the fourth graders were unable to work on their projects.  We will work on their word clouds on Tuesday at the beginning of the class period.

Project #2: Cyber Bullying - Part 1
This week we will be starting projects to learn about cyber bullying, what it is and what to do if it is happening to you or one of your friends.

Grades 1, 2, 3 and 4
We will begin our lesson with watching at a learninglab.org video on Cyberbullying.  We will go through the activities associated with the video and discuss how God would want us to create others, whether we are seeing them in person or on-line.  After our discussion, the students will take the Cyberbully quiz: http://learninglab.org/life_skills/cyberbullying/82c42c3428a8be8b77bbb0f535426ae8/teachers_guide_cyberbullying.pdf

Grade 5
Our fifth graders will be doing an extended project about being a Christian Digital Citizen.  The first component of the project will involve learning about Cyberbullying.  We will being with going over a PowerPoint on cyberbullying.  After our discussion we will then take the same quiz as the other grades.
