Computer Class Update: Week 21

This was my first week with your children.  I enjoyed getting to know them and teach them some new technology.

Now, for your update:  here is what we have been up to and we are working on for next week...

First Grade
Project #7:  Using a Word Processing Program
The first graders continued pretending they were newspaper reporters and added to their article in Microsoft Word.  Some of the terms we reviewed were:  font size, big and small, caps lock, enter key, space bar, and the eraser key also known as the back space or back arrow key.  We learned that the shift key gives us a capital letter if held down, and font color.  Next week we will finish our newspaper article and learn how to make a 6 page story book  with clip art in MS Word.

Online practice:  www.scootpad.com
When students finish their assignments, I continue to have them work on scootpad.com to practice their reading and math skills.  This is a great website you are welcome to work on at home as well.

Second Grade
Project #8:  Google Earth
The second grade students were not seen by me this week, since they were given the opportunity to go to the West Michigan Glass Art Center.  Next week we will revisit Google Earth  which lets you take a virtual journey to locations in the world, explore 3D buildings, imagery, and terrain.  We will also be using Google Docs for our Google Earth project.  Thank you to all of you for returning your Google Docs contract!

Third Grade
Project #6:  Computer Components Brochure
The third graders learned how to create a brochure in MS Publisher.  MS Publisher is a software program with templates, that lets you create newsletters, brochures, post cards, and more.  We reviewed the components of the computer:   input, output, and storage devices.  The students learned how to cut and paste images and clipart to acquire pictures for their brochure.  Next week, students will be continuing to work on their brochures.  Please turn in your Google Docs contract next week.  Thanks!

Fourth Grade
Project #5:  State Symbols Site
The fourth graders began researching information about a state of their choosing, except Michigan which was created by Mrs. Winstanley.  Students were given two different websites :  www.50states.com and http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/ to compile the imformation they will need to create their website.  Here are the items studnets researched:  state tree, bird, song, flower, animal, and nickname.  Next week students will begin creating their states site.  Please turn in your Google docs contract next week.  Thanks!

 Fifth Grade
 Project #5 Super Digital Citizen
The fifth graders finished up their Digital Footprint project this week.   The students learned how to create a Digital Superhero.  The students had a great time creating their Digital Superhero.  Next week, students will be creating a Digital Comic Strip.  Please turn in your Google Docs Contracts next week.  Thanks!

Typing:  Second-Fifth Grade
We are also working on our typing skills.  I am stressing to the students the importance of using the correct fingers while typing.  This has been a bit of a challenge for some of the students.  Please check out the Typing Practice tab for online resources your child can use to practice their typing at home. as well.

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a great weekend and  Happy St. Patrick's Day!
