Computer Class Update: Week 22

We received good news this morning (March 21) from Mrs. Winstanley.  She had her baby, Anna Kathleen.  She and baby are doing well.

Now for your update:  here is what we have been up to and what we are doing next week...

First Grade
Project #7:  Using a Word Processing System
The first graders continued pretending they were newspaper  reporters and added to their article in Microsoft Word.  Some of the terms that we reviewed were:  font size, big and small, cap locks, enter, space bar, eraser key also known as the back space or back arrow key, the shift key if held down gives us a capital letter, and font color.  We learned about bold, italicize, and underline.  Next week we will learn how to make a 6 page story book with clipart in MS Word.

Online Practice:  www.scootpad.com
When students get finish their assignments, I continue to have them work on scootpad.com to practice their reading and math skills.  This is a great website you are welcome to work on at home as well.

Second Grade
Project #8:  Google Earth
The second graders revisited Google Earth and went on a tour of the moon.  Google Earth lets you take a virtual journey to locations in the world, explore 3D, buildings, imagery, and terrain.  We will be using Google Docs for our Google Earth project, where we started a Moom Journal.  Next week, we will be adding to our Moon Journal, which we will be using to write a story about the moon.

Third Grade
Project#Computer Components Brochure
The third graders continued working on their Computer Components Brochure.  We reviewed how to cut and paste images and clip art in MS Publisher to acquire pictures for their brochures.  MS Publisher is a software program with templates that let you create newspapers  brochures, post cards and more.  Next week, students will be continuing their work on their brochures.  Thank you to all of you for turning in your Google Docs contract!

Fourth Grade
Project #5 State Symbols Site
The fourth graders continued researching information about a state of their choosing, except Michigan, which was created by Mrs. Winstanley.  Students added two more states to  their researching, so we can create a website with all 50 states.  Students were given two different websites: http://www.50states.com/ and
http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/ to compile the information they will need to create their website.  Here are the items that students researched:  state tree, bird, song, flower, animal, and nickname.  Next week, students will continue to create their states sites.  Thank you to all of you for turning in your Google Docs contract!

Fifth Grade
Project #6 Digital Comic Strip
The fifth grade Students created a digital comic strip solving a digital dilemma in a responsible way.  Students were given two different websites for creating comics: http://marvel.com/ and http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/.  Have your children show you how to use these two sites.  Next week, students will be learning how to us MS Excel, which is a spreadsheet program that is used to organize and analyze data/information.  Thank you to all of you  for turning in your Google Docs contract!

Typing:  Second-Fifth
We are also working on our typing skills.  I am stressing to the students the importance of using the correct fingers while typing.  This has been a bit of a challenge for some of the students.  Please check out the Typing Practice tab for online resources your child can use to practice their typing at home as well.

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a great weekend!
