Computer Class Update: Week 23

We had a busy week in computers this week.

Now for your update:  here is what we have been up to and what we are going to be doing the week of April 8...

First Grade
Project #8:  Six page story book like Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you See?
The first graders began writing a six page story in MS Word similar to Brown   Bear, Brown Bear what do you See?   We created one page of the book.  I reviewed with students how to save their book in their first grade folder.  When we return from Spring Break, we will continue adding to our story with text and clip art, until we have all six pages finished.  If you have a word processing program on your home computer, let your children show you what they have learned.  It is also good practice for them.

Online practice:  www.scootpad.com
When students finish their assignments, I continue to have them work on scootpad.com to practice their reading and math skills.  This is a great website, you are welcome to work on at home as well.

Second Grade
Project #8:  Google Earth
The second graders continued working with the Google Earth Website.  We brainstormed responses to five different questions about the moon.  Then, we added our responses to their journal page in Google Docs. that they started last week.  When we return from Spring Break, we will continue to add to our journals and collecting words for our stories that we will write in our Google Docs.

Third Grade
Project #6:  Computer Components Brochure
The third graders continued to work on their Computer Components Brochure.  Students needed to include Input, Output and Storage Devices along with the definition of the three components. We reviewed how to cut and paste clip art and pictures into their brochures and how to save the brochure in their student drives.  When we return from Spring Break, the students will finish their brochures and share them with the class.

Fourth Grade
Project # 5:  State Symbols Website
The fourth graders continued researching their state or states if they have finished with their first state.  The students began adding the information they collected to the following website:   https://sites.google.com/a/portageps.org/our-50-states/.  The two websites that the students have been using to find their states information are:    http://www.50states.com/ and http://www.statesymbolsusa.org. Here are the items that students were researching: state bird, song, flower, animal and nickname. When we return from Spring Break, we will continue researching our states and adding the information to the Google site stated above.

Fifth Grade
Project #7:  Our United States
The Fifth graders finished their Super Digital Super Hero and Comic Strip with a quiz.  We also went over word clouds at this website:  http://www.abcya.com/word_clouds.htm.  We also began learning how to use Excel.  Excel is a spreadsheet program that can be used to help us organize and analyze data/information. When we return from Spring Break, we will be using the Excel Spreadsheet to create charts of information about US States.

Typing:  Second-Fifth
We are also working on our typing skills.  I am stressing to the students the importance of using the correct fingers while typing.  This has been a bit of a challenge for some of the students.  Also with our projects, we have not had a lot of time to type, so if the students get a chance, they can type at home.  Please check out the Typing Practice tab for online resources your child can use to practice their typing at home as well.

If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Happy Easter!
Have a fun and safe Spring Break!
