Computer Class Update: Week 32

This was my last week with your children in computer class.  I have had a good time will all of the students  and will miss them all.  The week of June 10-12, there will not be any computer classes due to the shorten week.  The first graders  had a special surprise this past week.  Mrs. Winstanley and new daughter Anna, came for a visit  Thank you Mrs. Winstanley for coming and visiting with us and showing off Baby Anna!.

Now for your update.  Here is what we have been up to for the week of June 3...

First Grade
Project #11:  Presentation of the Seasons
The first graders worked on finishing their PowerPoint presentations.  Since we had a visit from Mrs. Winstanley, we didn't get to present our presentations to our classmates.  I have graded them and returned what the students have finished to their first grade teacher.  We also reviewed how to get on the Tumblebooks website through the Portage district library.  Below is the website address to get to Tumble Books":  http://www.pdl.lib.mi.us/parents-kids/tumblebooks/  Then, click on the top word Tumble Books, and you can get into the website and read, listen to stories or play games.  Keep practicing on your computers at home or go to your local library and use their computers.  If you have a library card, it is free to use the computers for about an hour at a time.

Online Practice:  http://www.scootpad.com/
When students finish their assignments, I continue to have them work on scootpad.com to practice their reading and math skills.

Second Grade
Project #9:  Pet Survey
The second graders finished working on their Pet surveys this week.  We reviewed how to use the sum button in Google Docs.  This week, they learned how to sort data in their spreadsheet.  I didn't have enough time to do the lesson on Staying safe Online, but did go over the lesson on using Tumble Books through the Portage District Library.  Below is the website for Tumblebooks:

Third Grade
Project #7:  Fractured Fairy Tales
The third graders finished their Fractured Fairy Tales this week.  Some started their fairy tales and didn't finish and others finished.  I have given graded work back to their teachers to pass out.  Since this is in Google Docs, students can access their accounts at home if they wish to add to their stories or just practice using Google Docs.  Another great aspect of Google Docs is that it saves your work automatically.  Keep using http://worldbookonline.com/wb/Login?ed=wb&tu=http%3A%2F%2Fworldbookonline.com%2Fwb%2Fproducts%3Fed%3Dall%26gr%3DWelcome%2BSt%2BMichael%2BLutheran%2BSchool%2521the computer during break.  If you don't have one, you can use one at the Public Library if you have a library card.

Fourth Grade
Project # 6:  Taking Care of God's World - Pollution Cause and Effect
The fourth graders did a great job with this project.  After several attempts at using different encyclopedia websites, we were able to find much of our needed information on World Book Online.  Some students had a tough time finishing information about their type of pollution and writing a research style paper, but they did a great job.  I have graded and returned the students papers to their classroom teacher.  Below are some of the sites that we used:

Fifth Grade
Project #7:  Our United States
The fifth graders finished thier sheet that they were working on on last Thursday.  We didn't get to do the projrct, but I feel that the students began to learn more about a spreadsheet and what it does.  Since we didn't get close to finishing the project, I have given students a grade for what they have done.  I have also given their regular teacher their papers to be passed out to them today.

Typing:  Second - Fifth
We are also working on our typing skills.  I am stressing to the students the importance of using the correct fingers while typing.  This has been a bit of a challenge for many students.  If they have a chance, they may practice at home.  Please check out the Typing Practice Tab online resources, that you can use to practice their typing at home as well.

If you have any questions at all, please contact Mrs. Winstanley at her portage email and I will get back to you.

Have a fun and safe summer!

Mrs. Pridgeon

Mrs. Winstanley will see you in the Fall!
